Have you ever applied for a job that you knew you were well qualified for, but you never even got a response from the company?  If you have been frustrated because of such a scenario, you’re not alone.  The reason is that being qualified is not enough.  That’s just the beginning.  There are steps that you need to take as a job seeker to show employers that you should be at the top of their list.

Here are some common reasons why qualifications alone may not be sufficient to land a new position:

  1. If your resume isn’t tailored to the position, you probably will never get a call. Your resume is usually your first point of contact with an organization.  Recruiters are looking for a close match to the requisition that is open.  If that match isn’t apparent at first glance, your resume will never go any further.  Being qualified is one thing.  Speaking directly to an employer’s needs is another.
  2. If you are not convincing in the interview that you are a great fit for the position, you won’t get an offer. Employers determine from your resume that you have the qualifications that they need.  But it is the interview that determines whether or not you receive a job offer.  If you have repeatedly found yourself in a situation where you generate interviews but you are not able to seal the deal, then that is a big clue that your interview skills need upgrading.  Clearly you are qualified, or you would not have landed the interview, but you need to make a compelling case for yourself that you are the best hire.
  3. If there is someone else who is inside the company that has been groomed for the position, even if you are more qualified, you may not be under serious consideration. Unfortunately it is a fact of life that sometimes positions are posted, but employers are not seriously searching for a new hire.  They already know who they plan to hire before they post the vacancy.  But to satisfy EEO, they post the position anyway.  There’s not much that you can do in such a situation.  The best thing to do is to apply for many different openings and not put all your eggs in one basket.  Even though some positions are already earmarked for a specific person, that is not true of all posted openings.  Somewhere out there is a position for you.
