You are probably one of millions of job seekers who joined LinkedIn to enhance your job search efforts. But simply being a LinkedIn member does not guarantee that recruiters will find you or contact you for an interview.
Here are a few steps to your profile noticed by your target audience—recruiters and hiring managers:
Show and tell. LinkedIn has a few applications that give you the option to incorporate multimedia into your profile. You can use Box.net to upload audio files as well as Word and PDF files and SlideShare and Google Presentations to upload video as well as PowerPoint presentations. You can either use an existing PowerPoint presentation or create a new one that illustrates your expertise. For example, you can show growth in sales by including a chart that shows a spike in sales over time. Including multimedia on your profile will add more life to it and give potential employers a more comprehensive view of you as a candidate.
Blog about it. Providing great blog content can be a excellent way of demonstrating your expertise, and it can give you credibility with hiring managers. LinkedIn has two applications that link your blog posts to your profile—BlogLink and WordPress. As you add new blog posts, they will automatically appear on your profile.
Get published. LinkedIn allows you to not only list your published works, but also to link to them on the web. Showing that you have been published gives your profile greater credibility.
Follow your connections’ tweets. LinkedIn has a relatively new application called Tweets that allows LinkedIn members to see which of their connections are on Twitter and then easily follow them. You can also save your connections as a Twitter list. This is a great way to stay abreast of what your connections are tweeting, which is very important if you are using LinkedIn and Twitter for your job search. Tweets by hiring managers and recruiters can give you an idea of what is important to them, and you can use this information to start a conversation with them.
Create a traffic jam. Drive traffic to your profile by adding keywords that recruiters will search for. You will show up on the first page of results for whatever keywords you choose if you have enough of those keywords on your profile. Recruiters are likely to contact those candidates whose profiles show up first in a keyword search.
